2008-05-30 - This is the result of a quick survey that I made in response of a request for comments by Simone Aliprandi, an Italian lawyer which is working on this paper: Copyleft e banche dati (in Italian).
This is my second survey, the previus one was conducted in 2006.

GNS: NGA GEOnet Names Server
http://earth-info.nga.mil/gns/html/FAQ.htm
National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. We provide complete files of geographic names information covering countries or geopolitical areas.
Q: Hi, I'm looking for a list a place names. I've found your lists at http://www.nga.mil/gns/html/cntry_files.html and they are exactly what I want. However, I do not see any information about copy-right and licensing etc. I need to be certain what, if any, restrictions apply to the use of this data. — or — We are interested in exploring the possibility of adding content from geonames files to our existing geographical databases. Can we proceed to download and use files? Is there a cost for this and are there restrictions on the use to which we can put the data?
A: There is no problem in making the geographic names data freely available. A suitable citation note is: Toponymic information is based on the Geographic Names Data Base, containing official standard names approved by the United States Board on Geographic Names and maintained by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. More information is available at the Maps and Geodata link at www.nga.mil. The National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency name, initials, and seal are protected by 10 United States Code Section §445.
